GEB PROCEEDS TO BUSIRIS TO SEE ANPU
2nd day of Parmuti in the year 5109 (15 Feb. 09)
As we gather to mark this day when Geb proceeds across the land to see Anpu or as many know him Anubis it is a good time to reflect on the roles of these two Gods and the part that they still play in our lives today. Geb is the God of the earth he is one of the Gods that form the Ennead of Heliopolis. In his role as the God of the earth along with the Goddess Shu he is one of our faiths creation Gods. He is also called the “Rpt” (the hereditary, tribal chief of the gods), and the earth itself was referred to as “pr-gb-b” (“The House of Geb”). Earthquakes were thought to be his laughter and it is he who supplies the minerals and precious stones found in the earth, as a god of mines and caves. The sign used in his name became associated with vegetation and the lush farming land by the Nile. It was said that barley grew on his ribs and he was depicted with green patches of vegetation all over his body. As a god of the harvest, he was sometimes considered to be the spouse of Renenutet, the cobra goddess. He has authority over the tombs buried in the earth, and assists in the ritual of weighing the heart of the deceased in the Halls of Ma´at. The justified dead are given words of power which allowed them to ascend to the sky, while those whose hearts are weighed down with guilt are trapped in the earth by Geb. Thus, he can be a malevolent being as well as beneficial deity, imprisoning the dead in his body. His wife Nut is often depicted on the cover of a sarcophagus, while Geb is represented by the base indicating that the justified dead are protected by both deities. It is Gebs role as a earth God that I would know like to talk about today for in his way his teachings and his followers where the first organic farmers that are recorded in any real detail. It is from them that we today in these times of global warming and recession can learn a great deal. Look back at the history of our great faith which for so many years went hand in hand with the development and history of our home land Egypt and we can see that Geb has shown us the way forward if only we are to look we will see. The land management that was practised in those days is a form that we can follow today. They did not have chemicals and genetic changed seeds yet they had the richest soil in the region which gave them the greatest harvests. Harvests that where the envy of the ancient world. Giving them enough not only to feed their nation but to sell to others a perfect example of how green ethics if followed can work. What we as followers of the Kemetic faith must never forget is that our faith is about the world around us. It is about working with each other to ensure that the worlds natural balance in the form of the Ma at is kept. There are so many ways that the Gods have shown us how we can do this. Geb has shown us that we have to look after the earth to use it wisely treat it with love and care. If we do this then we will reap the benefits in the forms of good croups & enough food for all. Over the years man has strayed from this path in some cases it has been a great disaster to all those who live in these areas. If they had followed the path that the Gods set us on all those century’s ago we would still have good croups with healthy fields and enough food to go around even in times of famine. Yet still the nations of the world fail to see that they are speeding down a road to total disaster in many cased with the backing of their faiths. We see the great rain forests being striped away leaving the soil venerable being just washed away. Geb & his followers saw how important it was to ensure that the land was managed in order to retain the good soil so that the croups would grow. They knew that the mismanagement would open the doors to the chaos that lies on the edge of our world. In this case to show it self as the desert sands that can sweep in if deforestation goes to far. This is exactly the fait that awaits the people of south America. So as followers of geb we have to put forward his case that the natural management of the land is the only way forward if we are to keep good healthy soil with good croups coming from it year after year. The genetically modification of our croups and our life stock is not the answer all it does to to slowly strip away the natural health strains that once gone can never be replaced. Then there is the use of sesional croups what is wrong with using the foods that are in season it is the natural thing to do. They taste so much better and we enjoy them all the better when we know they are only hear for a few months rather than all year round. Using seasonal foods also encourage us to make the most of them to find ways of preserving the surplus for latter in the year. All this is how Geb and his fellow Gods saw the natural order. It is why they gave us the knowledge to preserve foods as well. We can all do our part no matter how small if we only by those foods that fall within the natural parameters organic food seasonal food reduce your waist only buy and cook what you need. Follow these simple rules that the Gods taught us all those years ago and not only will we be doing our bit to help the mother earth to survive the onslaught of the forces of chaos but we will also be making our own lives better in so many ways. So as you can see Geb and the way his followers have lived in the past are just as relervent to us today. Even more so the truth is that we have lost our way. The world has strayed from the path that Geb laid down for us in the dawn of time but it is not to late. We can change and with the blessings of Geb and his fellow Gods we can turn back the clock of nature to a time when we lived in harmony with the land and its great gifts.
